The Race Track: Possibly the Noisest Place on Earth!
In international circles, virtually nothing gets the blood boiling like Formula 1 (F1) Racing. Taking in a Formula One Grand Prix live is a sensational experience. The vibrant colors of the racing cars, the shrieking of the engines, the hair-raising, audacious moves of the best drivers in the world, and the reactions of tens of thousands of F1 aficionados must be experienced at least in a lifetime at trackside. Spectators have their favorite drivers and cars and watch for the drama as the races go by, be it the Indy 500, or one of the 20 other major World Grand Prixs elsewhere in the world. ??Some may ask what is the formula for a formula one race car. Nalpolitano (2004) presents that immediately after its creation in 1904, the Federation Internationale de l?Automobile (FIA), the international Formula 1 sporting authority, became obliged to formulate restrictions to ensure the safety of the drivers and spectators, as well as guide motor sport in a direction benefiting the development of road cars. Harris (2011) indicates that Formula One is also one of the most popular sports in the world. Each Grand Prix draws more than 120,000 spectators to the track. Another 30 million people in 150 countries watch the race on television. In comparison, average paid attendance at a regular-season NFL game is about 66,500. A Formula One race, however, is not regular in any way. If anything, it?s like the Super Bowl and, like the Super Bowl, a Grand Prix can be an expensive for fans. For starters, general admission tickets cost about $150 (US). But for most Formula One fans, the rewards far outweigh the costs. And those rewards are pure and simple: Witnessing firsthand all of the agony and ecstasy that results when the world?s fastest race cars compete for victory.

Audiologists around the world are, of course, concerned about the hearing health of the drivers of these cars and the spectators that follow the sport. It is reasonable to surmise that noise has been apart of auto racing since it first began but with the mentaltity of the 
time being tht it was not harmful, it was overlooked until the modern times.? The Indy Star (2011) reports that: The noise level in the cockpit of an F-1 race car with the driver seated right in front of the engine is as high as 140 dB, making it one of the noisiest places on Earth. British Formula One star Jensen Button (2009) confirms that the sound levels in the cockpit of a Formula 1 race car do measure around 140 decibels and virtually all wear special ear protection to protect themselves from the considerable noiseexposure. Before the drivers put on their helmets they put in special earplugs that not only protect their hearing but also enhance their communication with the pits and sidelines during the race. But for fans who probably only get to see F1 cars in the metal once a year, and are several metres away behind high fences, are ear plugs really necessary. Collantine (2008) further recommends to race goers that ?I always wear ear defenders at F1 racers. Partly for the benefit of my hearing, but also so I can plug in earphones and listen to the race coverage on the radio so I can hear what?s going on.? The struggles of a gay military family | Photographers
The United States became the 23rd of 26 NATO countries to allow military service by openly gay people last week. An estimated 66,000 lesbians, gay men and bisexuals are serving in the U.S. military, according to a recent study by UCLA?s Williams Institute. Many are still afraid to come out. I visited a gay military family to hear the story they are now able to tell.

A week ago, Luz Bautista, 30, and her fianc?e Alejandra Schwartz, 24, both Navy petty officers, were celebrating the end of the U.S. ban on openly gay service members.
This week, they?re being forced to live apart.
Bautista headed to Illinois Monday, away from Schwartz and their daughter Destiny, 6, for a three year posting that could be extended.
?The emotional toll. You can?t even describe it. It has been tearing us apart for the last couple of months,? said Bautista.
While the repeal of the 18-year-old ?Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell? policy marked a major advancement for gay rights, it doesn?t address many of the practical effects it has for gay troops, and exposes the challenges remaining for the military to accommodate couples.
Bautista, a petty officer 1st Class and Schwartz, petty officer 2nd class, who has served as an Arabic translator in Iraq, are good examples of the inequities that exist for gay service members.
Same-sex couples do not have the same spousal benefits or protection from being stationed separately that heterosexual married couples in the military have.
Coming out to her colleagues ? and on national television ? last week was one of Bautista?s proudest moments. While it ended an era of having to live in secrecy, it does little to change the situation she?s in with a committed partner who is also committed to a Navy career.
The timing of the change almost seems cruel in light of how difficult her life is getting. In addition to having to leave Schwartz, she?s pregnant with a second child.
?It?s going to be difficult for me,? Bautista said. ?I?m going to be by myself for the first time in 12 years? I?m scared.?
Even if the couple could travel to one of the few U.S. states where gay marriage is legal, the marriage would not be acknowledged by the military or by the state of California. Under the federal Defense of Marriage Act, the term ?spouse? only refers to opposite-sex married couples.
?As a result, a service member in a same-sex relationship with another service member is not eligible for co-location consideration,? according to Pentagon spokeswoman Cynthia Smith. ?Gay, lesbian or bisexual service members in a committed same-sex relationship like their unmarried heterosexual counterparts can make individual hardship-based requests for accommodation in assignment.?
Bautista did make a hardship claim, but at the time she couldn?t reveal that she had a partner. Instead, she relied on the other struggles she faced: as a pregnant, single mom, caring for her own disabled mother while raising a child and paying a mortgage and bills on a house she owns in San Diego.
It was not hardship enough.
?Unfortunately I got orders right before the repeal happened,? Bautista explained. ?So I couldn?t say, I?m gay and I have a fianc?e, can you guys help me out please? But I think that even if I had said it, it still wouldn?t have mattered because the rules are the rules. This marriage is not real to the Navy.?
Her family tells her she should leave the Navy. But she and both children would lose their health insurance, unable to be considered as Schwartz?s family dependents.
Six-year-old Destiny knows her mother is about to leave, and follows her everywhere. She has an infectious giggle and a wobbly front tooth. She reads in English and Spanish, and speaks a few words of Arabic that Schwartz has taught her.
?What am I going to do if I get out? I love the military. I want to keep serving. I want to help out this country. I want to still go on deployments, and I want to go back on a ship,? Bautista said.
If some changes don?t happen in the next three years, she and Schwartz could even be deployed on a ship at the same time ? away from their children.
?Her shore duty ends in 2013, and she goes to a ship,? Bautista said. ?Because it?s a rotation, you go from shore to sea. I don?t get transferred till 2014 to a ship, so by that time, both of us are going to be on a ship, and we?re going to have two kids.?
?If we had spouse co-location, and the Navy recognized it legally, that wouldn?t happen. It?s one person on ship, and one person on shore because one person always has to take care of the kids. We?re not getting any of that because we?re not recognized as married.?
Bautista sees the next three years as a difficult test.
She and Schwartz plan to trade three-month stints with their baby. ?I think it?s ridiculous to have to do that. But I?m thinking more of the bonding that has to be done. Alejandra?s never had a baby before, so she?s more excited about this baby than I am.?
Bautista, who works as a counselor, has no idea when it may be possible for them to live together as a family again.
?I think I?m doing a very good job in the military, helping out sailors. That?s my job. That?s what I do,? she said. ?And I think it?s time that somebody helped me out, because I?ve been helping out everybody. So why can?t the favor be returned??

Obama links education reform to economic recovery (Reuters)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Young people in the United States are falling behind their overseas peers in reading, math and science, President Barack Obama said on Saturday, calling education reform an essential part of economic recovery.
In his weekly radio and video address, Obama said as many as a quarter of American students are not finishing high school and far too few young people are getting college degrees.
"It is an undeniable fact that countries who out-educate us today will out-compete us tomorrow. Businesses will hire wherever the highly skilled, highly trained workers are located," the Democrat said. "We have to pick up our game and raise our standards."
With the 2012 campaign for the presidency heating up, Obama is speaking increasingly often about education, a key issue for his political base.
His $447 billion job creation plan includes money for hiring teachers and school repairs, and on Friday he announced a loosening of "No Child Left Behind," a decade-old education measure introduced by former President George W. Bush that seeks to hold schools accountable for students' performance.
"No Child" has been widely criticized for being inflexible, requiring teachers to adhere to a narrow curriculum targeted mostly at ensuring that students pass standardized tests.
"Experience has taught us that the law has some serious flaws that are hurting our children instead of helping them," Obama said, making plain that education will be one of his key campaign issues into next November's vote.
"These problems have been obvious to parents and educators all over this country for years. But for years, Congress has failed to fix them. So now, I will," he said.
The president's job approval ratings have been falling on perceptions that he is a weak leader, particularly when it comes to healing the economy.
His rival Republicans have argued that Obama's stimulus spending put the country into fiscal trouble without making a big enough dent in unemployment, which remains above 9 percent. Much of the financial pressure U.S. schools are under reflects strained budgets at the state level.

LANCASTER ? The start of L-L League winter sports is still a couple of months off on the horizon.
But one winter sport got an early start on Saturday.
Elizabethtown hosted the 15th Annual E-town Takedown Wrestling Tournament, which featured some of the premier wrestlers in the L-L League.
Photog Chris Bradley was kind enough to send in 16 photos from the tournament.
Bradley reports that wrestlers from Elizabethtown, Solanco, Manheim Township and Manheim Central had successful showings in the tournament, which had high school, junior high and open divisions.
Top L-L League wrestlers in the field included Evan Wertz, Cortland Schuyler, Todd Dumas, Owen Bradley, Scott Lopez, Troy Ernest, Jeremy Rivera and Lucas Kline ? among others.

Early Monroe photos, copyrights to sell at auction (AP)
LOS ANGELES ? Copyrights and images from Marilyn Monroe's first photo shoot are hitting the auction block.
A bankruptcy judge in Florida ruled earlier this week that photos taken in 1946 of Norma Jeane Dougherty ? who went on to become the iconic Monroe ? will be sold at auction to settle the debts of the photographer.
Joseph Jasgur's photos, negatives and image copyrights will be sold in December by Julien's Auctions. The collection also includes several model-release forms Dougherty signed for Jasgur in Hollywood.
Darren Julien, chief of Julien's Auctions, said the photos have not been widely distributed and the collection has been locked up in court battles for more than two decades. He said the sale is significant because "it's very rare to see something where you can buy a copyrighted image of (Monroe), especially of her first photo shoot."

Court gets Ark. schools desegregation case
ST. LOUIS?? A decades-old battle over school desegregation in Little Rock reached a federal appeals court Monday, as attorneys for schools involved in the case argued that a judge was wrong to cut off tens of millions of dollars in state funding for programs to achieve racial balance.
The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis heard arguments from the Little Rock, North Little Rock and Pulaski County Special school districts as well as the state of Arkansas, which argues that it shouldn't have to make the payments any longer.
The fight to integrate Little Rock's schools dates back to 1957, when nine black teenagers needed the protection of federal troops to enter all-white Central High School. The state agreed to support busing students between districts and several magnet schools in the city in 1989, and the state is still spending about $70 million a year for desegregation efforts under that settlement with the three districts.
Chris Heller, the longtime attorney for the Little Rock School District, told the appeals court Monday that a lower court judge overstepped his authority when ruled in May to cut off most of those payments. He cited a 2000 case involving Kansas City's schools in which he said the appeals court used similar reasoning.
"You really can look no further than this court's own opinion," Heller said. "The cases are almost identical."
Stephen Jones, attorney for the North Little Rock schools, accused the same judge of not being clear in his order.
"It's difficult for us to respond to his criticisms when he doesn't tell us what they are," he said.
But Assistant Attorney General Scott Richardson argued that the districts have had enough time and enough money ? more than $1 billion in state payments since a 1989 settlement ? to desegregate.
Eventually, the payments would have to end, and "that's something that's been discussed for years," Richardson said.
The schools now serve about 50,000 students and have come a long way since the governor and hundreds of protesters famously tried to stop the Little Rock Nine. But thousands of white and black children still are bused to different neighborhoods every day under one of the nation's largest remaining court-ordered desegregation systems.
State lawmakers want to end the payments, saying the payments are wasteful, but the school districts argue that the money is still needed to fund programs such as magnet schools and voluntary busing.

Some parents have reacted to the uncertainty about future payments by looking to enroll their children in charter or private schools.
In his May 19 ruling to end the payments, U.S. District Judge Brian Miller accused the districts of delaying desegregation to continue getting state money.
Miller, describing himself as a "middle-aged black judge," concluded that "few, if any, of the participants in this case have any clue how to effectively educate underprivileged black children."

Obama endorses ending one day of mail delivery (AP)
WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama said Monday the U.S. Postal Service should be allowed to reduce mail delivery to five-days-a-week to help cut its massive losses.
The Postal Service lost $8.5 billion last year and is facing even more red ink this year as the Internet siphons off large amounts of first-class mail and the weak economy reduces advertising mail.
While the post office has cut more than 100,000 workers in the last few years it needs to cut more, close offices and find other ways to reduce costs to keep operating.
In his economic growth and debt reduction plan unveiled Monday, Obama endorsed the idea of dropping one day of mail delivery ? it is expected to be Saturday ? and urged other changes in postal operations
He agreed that nearly $7 billion the post office has overpaid into the federal retirement system should be refunded to the agency, urged that its payments for advance funding of retiree medical benefits be restructured, and said the post office should be allowed to sell non-postal products and raise postage rates.
Currently the post office cannot raise rates more than the amount of inflation.
Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., who has proposed a bill including many of the same suggestions, welcomed the president's statement.
"I have been saying for some time now that Congress and the administration need to come together on a plan that can save the Postal Service and protect the more than seven million jobs that rely on it," he said in a statement.
Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., who has his own postal reform bill in the House, responded that "the president's proposal is not what taxpayers or the Postal Service needs."
He asserted that Obama's plan "will certainly cost taxpayers money." Currently the post office does not receive tax funds for its operations.
Meanwhile, 75 members of Congress led by Reps. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., and Don Young, R-Alaska, called on the independent Postal Regulatory Commission to block the post office's plans to close as many as 3,700 local offices across the country.
The proposed closures, most in rural locations that do little business, are currently under review.
The letter called for establishment of a new business model for the post office without closing offices and cutting its work force.

Genetic defect that leaves some without fingerprints: Researchers trace cause to rare mutation
ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2011) ? Like DNA, fingerprints are unique to each person or set of identical twins. That makes them a valuable identification tool for everything from crime detection to international travel. But what happens when the tips of our fingers are missing those distinctive patterns of ridges?
It's not the premise for a science fiction movie, but a real-life condition known as adermatoglyphia. It's also known as "Immigration Delay Disease," because affected individuals experience difficulty in passing through security or checkpoints where fingerprint identification is required. Now Prof. Eli Sprecher of Tel Aviv University's Sackler Faculty of Medicine and the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center has identified the genetic mutation responsible for this unusual condition.
Though adermatoglyphia itself is extremely rare, defects that stem from any one genetic mutation give researchers unique insights into the most complex biological phenomena, such as the consequences of lacking a single protein.
The findings have been published in the American Journal of Human Genetics.
Baffling border control
"Immigration Delay Disease" came to the attention of the medical community when it did just that -- delay the attempts of one Swiss woman to cross the border into the United States when she was required to be fingerprinted upon entry. Border control personnel were mystified when the woman informed them that she was unable to comply.
Though an exceptionally rare condition -- only four documented families are known to suffer from the disease worldwide -- Prof. Sprecher was inspired to delve deeper into the causes of the condition, which, in addition to causing an absence of fingerprints, also leads to a reduction in the number of sweat glands. Abnormal fingerprints can also be a warning sign of more severe disorders.
Scientists know that fingerprints are fully formed 24 weeks after fertilization, and do not change throughout our lives. But "the factors underlying the formation and pattern of fingerprints during embryonic development are largely unknown," says Prof. Sprecher. He adds that it isn't only fingertips that have patterned skin -- palms, toes, and the soles of the feet also feature these ridges, called dermatoglyphs.
To determine the cause of this rare condition, the researchers did a genetic analysis of the Swiss family, nine of whom have no fingerprints. They compared the genes of those with adermatoglyphia and those without to identify where the genetic alteration lies. They discovered that a skin-specific version of the gene SMARCAD1 has a regulating factor on fingerprint development. The group that presented with adermatoglyphia, Prof. Sprecher explains, were found to have decreased levels of the short skin-specific version of the gene.
An inconvenience, but little more
Now that this gene has been identified, researchers will be able to further investigate how SMARCAD1 regulates fingerprint development. While adermatoglyphia may be intriguing, and can certainly be problematic for border security, it's also non-threatening. Despite the minor issue of the hand's inability to produce sweat, says Prof. Sprecher, those affected do not otherwise suffer.
This research was carried out in collaboration with Dr. Janna Nousbeck of the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center and Prof. Peter Itin of the University Hospital at Basel, Switzerland.
